## What Wasted ad spend means

Wasted ad spend is media budget that produces no incremental margin. It comes in two forms: spend that converted nothing at all, which the platforms do show, and spend that converted customers who would have bought anyway, which they do not. The second form is larger and quieter.

It is not the same as a low ROAS. A campaign can convert every click and still be waste if the people clicking were already on their way to the checkout, and a campaign with a modest ROAS can be the most valuable spend in the account if every sale it drove was new. The difference is incrementality, and only a test can see it.

## The Wasted ad spend formula and a worked example

The formula and an illustration; the corpus line is the audited figure behind it.

Wasted ad spend = **non incremental spend** + **spend that converted nothing**

Worked example *Illustration, not a client figure*

Four locations bidding on the same keywords against each other raise the price of every click. The spend converts, so no dashboard flags it, and the margin it should have produced never arrives.

22% of audited SMB marketing spend was wasted paid spend; only 62% was effective.

03

## Why Wasted ad spend matters in an audit

Quantifying wasted ad spend, not merely naming it, is the core output of a marketing audit. Across the 74 audits, 22% of SMB marketing spend was wasted paid spend and only 62% was effective; the rest sat in mispriced offers (9%) and leaky retention (7%).

The audit sizes it campaign by campaign. Branded search, retargeting and affiliate commissions are the usual suspects, because each pays for demand that often already existed. Geo holdouts and paused campaigns measure how much of each campaign's reported return survives when the spend stops, and the difference is the figure that goes into the report.

The calculator on this site models the range for your own spend and revenue in about a minute; it is a modeled estimate, not an audited one. The audit replaces the estimate with measured figures and a fix list in priority order.

## Questions about Wasted ad spend

### What is wasted ad spend?

Wasted ad spend is media budget that produces no incremental margin: spend that converted nothing, plus spend that converted customers who would have bought anyway. The second kind converts, so no dashboard flags it, and it is the larger share.

### How much ad spend is wasted on average?

Across the 74 published audits, 22% of SMB marketing spend was wasted paid spend and 62% was effective. The share varies by channel mix and by how much of the budget sits in branded search and retargeting.

### How do you reduce wasted ad spend?

Measure it first. A holdout on each suspect campaign shows how much of its return survives when it pauses; the campaigns whose return mostly survives are the ones to cut or cap. The calculator gives a modeled starting range; the audit gives the measured figure and the order to fix things in. [Model your own range →](/estimator/)
